More than 400 people have signed a petition that has been set up to create a public show of support for Essex businessman Mick Norcross’ plans to renovate the Grand Hotel in Leigh On Sea.
There have already been a number of setbacks for the project, with planning applications rejected on previous occasions, but the petition’s creator Amelia Slocombe of Chalkwell is hopeful that this campaign will show the local planning authority that there is a huge appetite to turn the former hotel and pub building into something that will benefit the community for years to come.
A post on the Facebook group Support Mick Norcross renovation of the Grand Hotel in Leigh says:
I’m delighted to report that we have over 400 signatures for the petition in support of Mick Norcross’ redevelopment for the Grand Hotel in Leigh on Sea. I am going through the results to check that everyone is a local resident (or otherwise has a legitimate interest in the project) and also making sure there are no duplicates or obvious fake names. It would be great if people could continue to sign whilst I complete this task!
By way of reminder, whilst we REALLY appreciate everyone’s support and kind words (I’m ignoring the not so kind ones), if this petition is to have any sway with Southend council, it has to be signed by LOCAL RESIDENTS only (i.e. those with a “SS” postcode) and the closer you live to the Grand hotel or Leigh on Sea the better!
Here is the link to the petition:
We have about 24 hours before I submit this petition, so if you haven’t signed already, please do so now! Don’t let this iconic building fall to ruin (or into the hands of someone with no track record whatsoever).
Thanks again, and remember, as a wise man once said:
“The power of the people is stronger than the people in power.”
So get signing!
The petition itself goes into more detail about the plans:
By signing this petition, you confirm that you support the following planning application by Michael Norcross (17/01464/FULM):
To “Convert existing hotel into mixed use comprising of basement wine bar and health club, ground floor restaurants and terrace, 18 self-contained flats on three floors, demolish existing mansard roof and form new replacement mansard roof, erect three storey rear extension with mansard roof, install balconies to rear and sides at first floor and third floor level, external alterations, install extract/ventilation equipment and solar PV panels on roof, layout additional parking, associated landscaping and communal roof terrace and form vehicular access onto Broadway (Amended Proposal) | Grand Hotel Broadway Leigh-On-Sea Essex SS9 1PJ”
