WATCH: Sarah Gearing cuts the ribbon at pub opening as life-saving surgery fundraising passes £100,000

It was a double celebration for Rochford’s newest celebrity Sarah Gearing on Saturday lunchtime as shortly before she was guest of honour at the re-opening of The Cock Inn on Hall Road, Rochford, her fundraising appeal for life-saving surgery passed £100,000!

That leaves just £30,000 remaining before the target is reached for surgery over in Spain in November – Southend Airport and EasyJet have already agreed to cover transport costs for Sarah and two helpers.

Rochford councillor Mike Webb passed on the latest update to our reporter with delight, and everyone involved should be incredibly proud of what they have achieved so far.

A number of members of ‘Team SurvivalSurgery4Sarah’ were present for the ceremony along with a number of well wishers as she declared the refurbished Greene King venue officially open for business.

The ribbon cutting was just the first part of a big day of fundraising at The Cock Inn spearheaded by Sue Rickwood and her team, culminating in a musical celebration and raffle on Saturday night along with a number of other activities.

You can get involved by popping along to the pub in Rochford, with full details available on Facebook here.

More information about the fundraising campaign in general can be found on the SurvivalSurgery4Sarah Facebook page here.

According to her fundraising page:

Life is precious. I love mine, and am determined to make the most of it – but I need your help.

My name is Sarah Gearing, I am 40 years old and I am in need of life-saving spinal surgery which is unavailable in the UK.

My only options for this surgery are in the USA or Spain. The great news is I have been accepted as a candidate for surgery by the neurosurgeon in Spain, and due to the severity of my case my surgery has been scheduled for 9 November.

The less great news is that this leaves me just 6 weeks to raise the £130,000 needed to pay for my surgery and post-operative care.

Without this crucial life-saving surgery it is unlikely I will still be here by Christmas.
